More about Rick Rubens Recreations
When referring to reclaimed materials, this will often mean an existing piece of furniture from yesteryear, but not always. There is a plethora of well-made furniture available, which is out-dated; produced from slow grown quality wood, the likes of which we may never see again. These days’ trees can be made to grow faster to quicken the supply for furniture, at the expense of quality. This is particularly seen with hard woods, such as oak and mahogany.
Rick believes in sustainability and he is on the board of directors for Hurunui Recycling.; his local community owned, not for profit recycling organisation.
Rick’s work is far more than a quick paint, stain and polish. In most cases, the finished product bears little resemblance to the original. It is not unusual for the donor piece to be completely dismantled. Yes, this includes glued joints as well and rebuilt from scratch, sometimes in a different configuration. This attention to detail ensures the quality of work Rick Rubens has become renowned for.
Rick’s past to the present
After leaving school in the UK, Rick studied engineering for three years. Although graduating with flying colours, he decided engineering was not for him and turned his hand to the retail industry. Completing a retail management course, Rick’s eye for detail and perfectionism saw him managing a shoe shop with eight staff. Not a bad achievement for a nineteen year old. He then moved on to new car sales for a family owned franchised dealership for the best part of two decades.
Whilst in the motor trade, Rick’s passion was renovating and furnishing houses. He even designed and project managed the build of his own house.
When he reached forty, a new adventure beckoned. Rick’s wife, Juliane, was born in New Zealand, so down-under seemed like a great idea. Fancying a change from cars, he became a rural internet provider’s sales and marketing manager; also specialising in improving the company’s customer care and technical assistance experience.
Fast forward to 2011, after completing the renovation of their house and 2 acre garden in NZ, Rick decided to throw his weight behind his passion in a creative career. Rick Rubens Recreations was born, and he hasn’t had to do a day’s work since. As Rick recounts “As Confucius said, choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life!”
