Kangaroo Hangover 5 Drawer Chest
The Hangover part of the name may be obvious but the Kangaroo? Well, if one takes a close look at the legs they have a passing resemblance to a Kangaroo’s……. simple.
This highly unusual piece is predominately Rimu wood with polished aluminium, made using a mid-century dressing table and the Rimu from an old bed.
Inspiration came from the dressing table which, in its original form gave the impression it was one piece. In fact, it was two fixed together. Reconfigured and reengineered for additional structural strength along with the help of the Kangaroo, a one of a kind functional artform came into being.
Despite its radical transformation every part of the dressing table has been re-used. Except for the old screws and nails. With all Rick’s work old mechanical fixings are replaced by new and as he states, “nails do NOT belong in furniture”. The old atomic conical legs have become the new drawer handles and the old handles now adorn the back panel’s trompe l'oeil style. A careful inspection will reveal small mirrors behind the new handle’s apertures.
As with all of Rick’s creations, the hidden areas “get the treatment” with metallic stripped drawer bottoms and of course, that idiosyncratic back panel. Every detail is taken care of.
The Rimu wood as one would expect, is finished to an extremely high standard with Danish oil under soft furniture wax. Creating beautiful natural wood tones with a silky finish that just has to be stroked.
